Seems like every club is trying to make the experience as good for the shooters as possible.
But what does that really entail ?
I tried to put a few points down on paper to make the Hornets Club shoots a experience each and every shooter would enjoy
Please feel free to comment as everyone has something constructive to help make it a better experience for all.
1. Competitors need to let someone know they are coming or it is impossible to organise anything
2. Tasks shared around to everyone i.e. Scorer, range officer, sign in, coach (new shooters), this gives the ability to run large competitions and have people sick etc and still have a shoot be able to be run.
Being involved gives people a sense of belonging and feeling good they can help
3. Targets should be scored and entered on computer and posted on Facebook or here on Benchrest bulletin so others that can't make can still be involved and records can tracked for end of the year presentations and goals for everyone to aim at beating.
4. Printed scores given out at end of shoot.
People love to know where they came in comp and what score they got or what is the point?
5. Database of running positions for the year and years so competitors can track there progress
6. Bench positions rotated so everyone gets the best/ worst benches at some stage and there is fair competition.
This high lights the need for No 1 point of nominating that you can attend.
7. Competitors hang and bring back their own targets if someone has a sore leg or whatever I am sure someone would be happy to help.(this is for club matches)
8. Trophies given at end of the year party so everyone can cheer the achievements and be encouraged to set there own shooting goals.
9. Free coffee and tea ,Maybe someone can bring some snacks each week on a rotating basis?
11. Promote for greater membership by club Tee shirts or just making those attending feel part of the club
12. Have a quarter yearly shield or cup that gets the winners name put on it maybe dedicate it to a shooter that can no longer shoot
These are points that I have gathered from the best points from all the Brisbane clubs but I am sure there are many I have missed
If the clubs are strong the sport has a future and new shooters come to something that is going somewhere.
I like 2 and 11. We do most of the others at Newcastle..
We don't have a name yet but that might come with the tee shirts..

It’s with great interest that I read the post from the jet
this is exactly what we have done up here in our club with shirts done just for our bench rest shooters there are some small things we do not do but will take it on board to make a change we do use computer scoring and email system instead of Book Face we also send out emails on a regular bases as a reminder of when shoots are coming up things of interest and events both local. State and national I also give out end of year results along with certificates for First , Second and Third places for both seniors and juniors as you say the interest this creates and feedback to make the next event better than the last
we also run things the same way for the Northern I R B Challenge between the 5 ranges throughout the year I think all clubs should do this as it’s a good thing we don’t do the coffee tea thing as we do not have the fertility’s on range for this but its food for thought and may happen at some stage

The coffee and Tea thing was just to get people to stop long enough to compare war stories etc of the shoot and so that the achievements of the shot was recognised
Also and I think the main thing it really helps people form friendships that will keep people coming back to see their mates.
People love to belong and our common interest links us.

In my time with club shooting I have seen many clubs roar ahead and others disappear into oblivion. Those clubs which are doing well have a committee who recognise that everyone is important and wants to enjoy themselves. They have classes for most competitors so each shooter does not feel threatened by the top performers with much better gear. Then there is recognition. Each shooter is mentioned very positively in the newsletters, presentations etc. Digs does this nicely in his Tuesday night report.
If club committees can put aside egos and work for, and with the members, most clubs prosper but when comittees think they are all powerful, things go pear shape and people just don't come anymore or if they do, it is without any real love for the club.
Delegation of jobs is also essential to let members feel wanted. It also helps keep them involved and their ideas can sometimes be most beneficial.
Just what I have seen in my time shooting around the Country and overseas too.

Digs does do a really good job of the reports and data base which is probably one of the best things about the Tuesday night SSAA club.
Also agree that it is really important to have everyone feel included and part of the club.
Hadn't thought about the classes but you are spot on as it is impossible for anyone with a factory sporter to be able to run with the Heavy competition rifles
We probably need to have a factory class for new shooters to be able to see if Benchrest shooting is something they would like to do.
Without new shooters our sport will die

What if the blokes that do well share their rifles and coach a new shooter that is interested ?
This would give the new shooter a chance to see what shooting a good rifle ammo can do
Of course this would only work if the shooters are ok with it and maybe they could shoot what the new person normally shoots ?
I don't mean always but maybe have a swap day shoot ?

I like the bit where the good shooter shots the newbies gear. I have all the gear and only a small idea from what ive learnt from forums and youtube. Is it my gun, my ammo or me, it's probably me. Having a seasoned shooter try my gear would answer that question.

Thats actually a really good point hadn't thought about that
I know I would have loved someone that has been shooting for a while check my rifle rest etc out for me.
