Match Report

You guys will have to wait until tomorrow or even the next day. After 4 days shooting and a 9 hour trip home I'm stuffed.
2 days of serious IRB competition at Springsure will do that to you.
And the fact I'm getting older doesn't help either.

Team KAOS cleans up @ the Nationals

OK I'm awake (I think) so here it goes.
I'll start off at the end by drawing your attention to the fact that Team KAOS members won each of the events, just in case you missed that point in reading the results. Sully won the light rifle, Normy the heavy rifle and I snuck in for the IRB win.
I'm also going to restrict my comments to the IRB comp, and let someone else talk about the benchrest days. I suck at benchrest, especially light rifle with a 6x scope. It's rather demoralising trying to shoot a target where you cannot see an aiming point other than that black square box. You'll get away with using that on a range like Coffs but with the conditions in Springsure you might just as well sit a the bench and flog yourself with a stick of wet celery. Richard Powell forgot to turn up for one detail and was given a 2 1/2" penality and he even beat me on that card. I think I had those ears on most of the day. Even when the heavy event came around I think the care factor was just not there. So if I cannot get my eyes fixed, Stuart is going to have an assistant scorer next year and someone to share the Minnie Mouse ears for being the biggest woose.
Saturday afternoon after shooting finished saw what looked like a field of 2500 flags and probes re-arranged to cater for the 18 bench rotation for the IRB matches. A short practice period to re-sight rifles after the 100 yard cards didn't do much for people's confidence for the coming days. Saturday's highlight, other than the end of the benchrest comp, was the dinner. About 50 people sat down to share a meal before the presentations.
It appears that a number of people agree that IRB is the game as the shooter numbers continued to build towards with 55 sitting down on Sunday and Monday. Even Stuart made an appearance on the line. It was good to see a couple of high profile centrefire shooters even having a go as well. Willy is still trying to workout how to get more powder into a rimfire round and Dave has decided his gunsmithing fee for rimfire work has to double just to cover the frustration factor.
I'm thinking the old saying "I'd rather be lucky than good" covered the bench draw. I do not usually watch people shooting but I did notice that the conditions down on the right end of the range were maybe a little more difficult that the rest of the benches, not that any other bench or detail got it "sweet".
Now for anyone who has never shot at Springsure, I suppose I could describe it as Newcastle on steroids. Switchy conditions with 2 small berms at 25 and 35 providing "un-explained" lift and gravity defying results, left a lot of people scratching their heads. An indicator of the conditions might just be the fact that there were only 2x250 cards shot over the week-end. Congratulations to Greg Roulston and Stuart Ellio. Stuart's was even more impressive as a comeback score after his first card. Depending on the conditions for the detail, cards were finished anywhere between 5 minutes and 19m50s. Billy ended up with 5 to go with 30s and I got down to 15s with 3 to go on one card. It was a case of just picking the time to shoot. Day 1 ended up pretty tight at the top with 1 point separating the top 4 shooters. Conditions on day 2 appeared no worse than day 1 but the scores seemed to be more variable across the field.
In the end, Qld dominated the Top 10 with Robin the only interloper in an otherwise clean sweep. Caden kept us all honest with a solid 5th place. I believe Norm is seriously considering raiding the comic collection to finance another father/son trip to Malta in 2020.
Even with 4 details, the 20 minute time limit meant that it was game over red rover early in the afternoon. Presentations over, a number of people took the opportunity to start the journey home. Team KAOS took of to see the local sights led buy our trusty guide. Sully the "Mayor of Springsure".
I couldn't finish this report without thanking a number of people. Firstly the members of the Springsure club. Led by Gavin and Sue, Catherine, Stuart's offsiders (who names I don't know, sorry) and the 3rd generation target crew led by that livewire Macey and everyone else who chipped in, you all made this one of the best shoots of the year. I'm sure that those people who came to Springsure for the first time will remember you friendliness long after the pain of that wind fades into a distant memory. For those of us who have been there before, you delivered what we've come to expect - a great week-end.
Finally a personal thanks to Stuart Ellio. Before I went to Spain I asked Stuart about developing a strategy to shoot in the wind. His advice and his time at the Brisbane range one afternoon, gave me the understanding to develop one. It stood me in good stead in Spain during the team event and it came in valuable again on the week-end. I'll have to remember it for next year in Newcastle and at my age that might be a problem so I could need a refresher before then. Thank you my friend, you own a part of this win.

2018 Shooter of the Year

I forgot to mention that I believe Sully has won the rimfire shooter of the year after the week-end.
Although there is still an event at Warwick, the points on offer will not be sufficient to overtake the man who has led from the get go.
Robin and I tried to run him down but he just kept trotting along in front of us saying nah nah.

Congratulations Digs,Sully and Norm on winning the three National titles

The fact that Digs won by about six points speaks volumes for his performance in this competition.

A point that may also not be apparent in the noise of the whole competition is that Normy was coming 27th after the fifty metre section of the Heavy Benchrest competition
He never quit not for a minute shooting anything up to 42 shots on the sighter card on one target. This fact alone should tell everyone just how difficult the conditions were.
But he pegged everyone else back in to win by the end of the 100 yard section, that never give up attitude is certainly to be commended .

Sully congratulations also on the shooter of the year first place ,you never looked like being headed with one strong performance after another

Team KAOS stands for "kick arse on Sunday" but we seemed to do that everyday this year but Team KAED doesn't have the same ring to it
Though I certainly didn't give the team much help, though I was shooting the best rifle I have ever owned and ammo I did live up to our motto though of "All the gear and No Idea"
Maybe next year

The Springsure club ran a fine competition top to bottom with everything going like clockwork and friendly country spirit.
Thank you all very much
