New forum - Website requests

I need ideas of how I can make this site better and more useful for competitors.

All ideas would be appreciated!

Rob.

Website

Hi Rob,
I think that if there was a section on the page that flashed with up coming shoots would be an advantage, I am also looking at doing this on our fly site because folks just log on for a very short time and they don't really read anything till it is sometimes to late.

We have a section on our site for interviews and tech information and that is really well received perhaps some of the very prominent shooters in benchrest can put up their advice or expertise to assist other shooters.

Just thoughts.

BB has in the past been pro centrefire but now it would seem that Rimfire is more active but does not get the publicity it deserves. Equal space would atttact both groups and provide more discussion i believe. Again more photos of Rimfire winners on the forum would show support for the little brothers who probably experience many more issues in gaining a winning target.

I post what I get !!!

I would love to see equipment lists online for ALL matches.

But, unless someone takes the time to send it to me, it remains a secret.

Equipment Lists

Equipment lists I only know when I have attended the last 5 odd state shoots we have lodged equipment lists as it was part of the Nomination form not sure if it made the bulletin I should have a look but this would be great at National level as with myself and others being relative new to the Art of Bench Rest it would be a good source of information in what the top shooters use and make choosing the parts for a custom build that bit easier not that it’s an easy task there is so much to explore and I know I have pestered a lot of the top to gain information regards this my Rant cheers all stay safe all

Ideas

You know what ? it’s about the ALL the Top shooters and More so the discipline presidents Etc to encourage and be seen as pushing our disciplines .
If our elected representatives and top level shooters are just seem as messengers and don’t have true input we will suffer.
It’s people in positions off influences that create change.
Get out top shooters, SSAA , TRA etc etc deligates to contribute constantly to BB and be seen as positive advocates for benchrest then we can see change and forward progress .

I agree Chris,

I agree Chris,
We all need to engage a bit more when we can. Most of us tend to have good talks on the phone about our sport, perhaps we could share some more here to keep the new and potential competitors more informed.

Just a tip Chris, would help if you post your comments before your 3rd stubby mate :)

Ask a Hall of Famer

I have added a sub-forum for both CF & RF called Ask a Hall of Famer.

Anyone can ask a question, but answers from HofF members only.

Hopefully this is what you are looking for,

Helping other shooters

Hi Everyone
I agree it would be great if here was a forum that could help other shooters get to a higher level. The trouble with doing this on forums is that it can provide the new shooter with misinformation. New shooters are learning the fundamentals of becoming competitive. Information from various sources can cause issues for new shooters in terms what is right for their shooting.

The biggest thing you can do for new shooters is to continue to attend Benchrest matches and learn from the veterans. Attendance is the number one thing that will improve one’s shooting.

What do our fellow shooters think in attracting and maintaining new shooters to the sport?
* More shoots
* More Club come and try days
* Benchrest workshops

Interested in your thoughts.

Regards,

Will Greer

Do you think a Benchrest

Do you think a Benchrest School like the USA do would work here?
Maybe worth a try if there is interest

Benchrest School

A once a year event would be viable.
Maybe have 1 day of learning basics and second day shooting a comp for the participants.

You mentioned once that the experienced shooters should work with a new shooter with the aim being for that shooter to be able to beat you in a match. I know this may sound a bit simplistic but I think it's important to reduce the learning curve for the newer shooters otherwise they may find it all too hard and walk away.
Another idea i heard floating around is to have a match where we pair up some of the more experienced shooters with new and less experienced shooters and have team scores, placings etc... I think this would be a good way to spread the knowledge. Not too sure how you would pair people up but I'm sure something could be worked out.

Br school

Sounds like a plan.
Maybe local club competitors arrange with their ranges to invite regular local shooters to shoot a club match with a BR shooter let them share your rifle and rest etc and let them experience and understand what we are about .
Use a monthly club day as an opportunity to Do this concept.
It’s a way to get some interest

Great idea

That is something we all should be doing.
It’s very difficult to encourage people to take up this sport, but once they get hooked, it can very rewarding and you can continue to compete well into retirement.
Thank you

Benchrest school

Thanks for the suggestions.

Michael,
If there is a club willing to run a school, I would like to think some experienced/veteran shooters would be there to mentor new people to the sport.

I agree with you John ,when you say we need to all work together to make some of these ideas come together
We need a group of people and a Club willing to be part of a event similar to this.

Hi All
As you have read above, is there a club willing to take on an event as described by John or a club willing to run benchrest workshop/school annually, biannually, quarterly?

local clubs

As a new shooter, for this BR school idea to work it has to be done on a local level in each state. In my opinion its no point in lets say Springsure club in central Qld says yep we'll run one, Who is going to take time off work and drive up there from Sydney? Not me. Lets take Sydney for instance, it has to be held at Silverdale or Colo, if Peter will allow it. Same for the North coast of NSW, Coffs Harbour could hold one etc etc. But first you have to find out how many people would be interested in attending. In my opinion I think there needs to be more club shoots. In Sydney there is no club that im aware of. Coffs Harbour has a great club scene looking at their shooting calendar. There probably is a few rimfire clubs in the Sydney area as there are a few RF ranges dotted around the metro area but no CF clubs. SSAA need to pull their finger out and buy some land and open a new range in Sydney. or expand the Silverdale range. This virus BS is killing the sport for me. Ive sold 2 BR rifles and im getting back into other hobbies I used to do before I got into shooting.

Clubs

Sadly COV-19 has effected Sydney (silverdale) badly .
We were 7 days away from our first club shoot at silverdale and we had 15 shooters booked in and Dave Dundas managed to get few a rimfire shooters To join in .
So hopefully sooner that later that can happen in Sydney and once things are back to normal I’ll be happy to push all the ideas directly to Sydney branch .
A “Benchrest Bonanza “ weekend at local ranges would be a great way to get regular shooter involved .
Pair a regular shooter with a Benchrest shooter and learn and compete over 2 days ,

I gotta say

In all the rimfire clubs i have shot at and seen in Sydney and around the country for that matter the help and training given to shooters is fantastic. Maybe not so much here on the forums but live on the range it happens all the time and for free from juniors to seniors to lending gear to more official paid coaching.

Advice

I agree Bill , rimfire has a massive pool of competitors and a large amount of great shooters to teach and nurture young shooters.
As I have said before, rimfire is a great entry to all aspects of benchrest .
Where the issue lies is the lack of availability of centre fire clubs to allow shooters try other benchrest disciplines.
Please don’t think I have any issue with rimfire , i truely don’t but it’s about trying to push a discipline in trouble if we don’t get the support of all compeditive shooters.

to all the above I hope I did

to all the above I hope I did not treed on any toes with my comments that was not intended but I must say I got a bigger response than I expected and all positive amazing thanks so much if your read some there are some tips in there already great stuff I do think the school come take a look see days may not work I know for one I would not get enough people to attended other than my shooters already doing the bench rest thing

this is fantastic response I think Rob’s idea of a question and answers forum is the way to go I do get enquires every time we hold our shoots on our days nights I think we tend to forget that most who are interested shoot other discipline and have basic knowledge they just need answers to questions as is with those of us that have been BITTEN by the Bench Rest Bug lots of stuff and if this is in place then things will flow may take a bit to get started but one question Leeds to another I have been only at this for some 6 years now and I know I have bugged the top and have received countless hours of coaching from the top if it was a course it could have a price tag of thousands the ones that helped me and still are I thank them so so much and owe a det of gratude to them the surgestered form will work it needs time to take off and some HALL OF FAME SHOOTERS for the answers and I hope not from the same chap all the time as this would spell out the deth of it

as for a once a year week end I feel this will not work as the attendance would be minalil to say the least this needs this form to suvive and thrive then the info is written and can be refranced at any time same as questions we all know that referenc is there and by looking questions can be limited to size and length dam good idlers there we now need to follow up on this and get back to the bear aspects of it and we all know we are trying to better our self’s I know I would read any and all take snippets from this and right them in a book so you have a ready to recover at any tome

thanks for hanging in there to the end it may have helped tithe the reply

thanks

Interest

Wally,
What I understand some ranges may struggle with numbers willing to have a go at benchrest.
The thing about Sydney Branch is that it has nearly 40,000 members and in my opinion has potential to produce a lot of future competitive shooters if we push the benchrest centre fire discipline.
95% of competitive shooting in Sydney is rimfire , pistol and shotgun and the other would probably be F class shot at Malabar every weekend , where I know dozens of shooter get to shoot in multiple clubs

SSAA shooter magazine survey

What someone could do to gauge any interest is ask SSAA shooter magazine to do a survey in their magazine as to how many people might be interested in a" try and shoot day" or "Benchrest school" at their local range.
Also remember a lot of shooters who are not target shooters, ie hunters, use muzzle brakes so they would have to be made aware that BR shooters don't like being blasted off the adjoining bench if they have one attached to their rifle. Maybe a partition could be erected on a bench or two for those shooters.

robbycar

Does anyone read that?

Mine goes straight into the bin every month. I actually wrote to SSAA and asked if I could get a discount on membership if I didn't get a magazine. They weren't interested!

I am sure they make most of the income from advertising based on circulation. They don't care if anyone actually reads it!

I stopped reading it when they cut Brendan's benchrest column.

same here

I just leaf through it then chuck it also, but im not into hunting. The people your trying to bring into the BR scene may well be people into hunting. The F class and fly shooters have the rifles but they may be to heavy even for BR HV class.
On the F class forum some time ago there was a thread similar to this one, "what can we do to attract new shooters" that thread went on for 10-20 pages, lots of ideas, lots of talking.
Good luck with what your trying to achieve here.
