Travel by air to shooting comps: ammunition?

Hopefully someone who has travelled by air with ammunition (firearms are seemingly much more straightforward) to a shooting comp in recent times can advise the best way for achieving approval. EG do you get something in writing, or phone, prior to arrival at airport? Is it a sure bet that approval will be given upon otherwise just rocking up to the checkin counter? Again, looking for the voice of experience on this, so as to make trip to Mackay a smooth one! Below is the semi-informative blurb from Qantas.

Sincerely
John Weigel

Ammunition (cartridges for weapons)
Ammunition must be carried in accordance with the regulatory requirements of the country you are travelling to, from or through. It's your responsibility to ensure all relevant import and export permits, licence and documentation (including Australian requirements) are obtained prior to travel.
What ammunition you can carry and requirements of how to pack:
Ammunition requirements
Airline approval required Yes
Carry-on baggage No
Checked baggage Yes
Requirements
• You must hold a valid firearms licence, permit or enforcement agency identification, which you'll need to present at check-in.
• You can carry up to 5kg of ammunition gross, including packaging, per passenger. Note: your allowance isn't able to be combined with another passenger's in one bag or container.
• Ammunition should be securely packaged and individually separated within the container.
• If your ammunition is packed within a locked firearms case, it must be in a separate locked container.

No permit for Firearm only

Not and/or just notification required for ammunition only with Qantas anyway

John,

Google this one.

Carrying ammunition and/or firearms on the Qantas Group Network (PDF).

I only fly Qantas mainly due to baggage costs.

Only things I will add is you need a permit from WA POLICE to enter Western Australia if you ever plan on going over there. Allow 2-3 weeks for permit

You always have to check in at counter, no APP pre check in or machines at airport, need to line up. Put Fluor green tape “baggage services” around items (the check in counters have it) and then take firearm and or ammunition to special baggage drop off and collect at special baggage services counter but I have had it come out on carousel especially if the fluro baggage tape is not on it or not a rifle case.

Your firearm has to be on same flight and if not questions are normally asked. Make sure you allow a reasonable amount of time for connecting flights. I always make sure it is 50mins to an hour as normally security escort from baggage services.

International is different again depending on Country you are going too.

Travel by air to shooting comps - thanks for info

Thanks guys.

So no early clearance - just rock up to the counter at departing airport (early, and informed).

Appreciate the help. May see some of you at Springure. I'll be the guy you see detained in Emerald airport facility explaining that 'four-gun' really is a 'thing'.
