Rim Thickness

I have been rim thickness testing some ammo and I have found that the thickness doesn't seem to change how it shoots that much am I missing some thing ?
I have found that the rim thickness varies from 1mm to 1.05 mm ( Remington Gold metal target),This is my practice ammo
I do not own a dedicated bench rest gun but I am very keen to get tighter groups any help would be appreciated.
I am using a Anschutz 1712 as i am also shooting Metal Silhouettes .
I use Eley match whilst shooting Bench-rest competition but it is very expensive to practice with hence the reason I am trying to find cheaper Ammo to practise with.

Kind regards Ben

Whats the use of a Forum if

Whats the use of a Forum if no one will help you ?
You all bang on about how to get more shooters then just ignore someone who is trying to start out.
Heres a hint "help new shooters "
Whats the point of being a hall of fame shooter if you cant pass on your knowledge or is it ok to ignore someone new asking for help ?
I am certain that many that have looked at my question could help but choose not to bother . I wonder why we cant get more shooters ?

OK Simmer down

Hi Ben,
You will not get many replies to a question like this because most people are not willing to pass on information that is subjective. As soon as they do there are certain people on the forums that will have a go at them for it.
For what it is worth, most of the bench rest crowd have tried batching ammo to rim thickness and weight, some still do and believe they get better results.
Rim thickness, Guns like yours should not be too sensitive to rim thickness as the factory headspace will absorb the variations. If you had a custom rifle with a Eley headspace, you might get some benefit removing the fat rims if it resulted in tight bolt closure..
I practice with the same brand of ammo that I compete with just at a lower grade, like SK Match for Lapua and or the lower grade Eley lines. There is some benefit in keeping the same brand of wax down your barrel.

Hello Ben Could you tell us

Hello Ben
Could you tell us more about your 1712. Has it got any mods, like is it bedded?
The Annies respond very well to a good bedding job. You might find that once it's bedded that ammo might perform better.
Cheers Mick

get a move on

Hi Ben,
Can you hurry mate and answer Tim (not real name) and Micks questions, some of us older blokes may not be around in time to help!

But seriously rim thicknessing and or weighing ammo removes any dodgey ones, i do both to all of my rimfire ammo and every now and then one is 51.3 grains when all the rest have been 51.8 or 51.9 so obviosly something is wrong with that bullet to be so underweight, but ammo is only one peice of the puzzle, BR is hard work and there are many other factors as the guys here have started asking about. If your remington ammo is relatively grouping and you arent getting any flyers then jobs done, if your batching it all correctly and the odd one goes astray then you need to start looking at why, front rest, rear bag, shooting position, bedding, action tension or stock the list goes on, if the Eley is grouping well in the same rifle and conditions maybe it's not the right practice ammo. I'm no expert or HOF shooter but I am a dedicated BR shooter and i hope my reply helps you in some way with the issue.

Thanks guys

Thanks guys
I will never be accused of not saying what I think and sometimes I have posted it before I thought it through sorry but to hell with others that want to pull you down.
I have not found that with the Federal Ammo that rim thickness testing has been worthwhile I have tested and shot 1000 rounds I thought I thought I may have been doing something wrong .
I will buy a scale and weigh bullets to see if that makes a difference.
what accurately do you need in the scale any suggestions would be welcome ?
The Eley Match is way superior ammunition than the federal as last night I shot my first 50 target in hunter class at 100 this is probably because there was no wind to speak off but mainly better ammo.
though the gun shot a 49 and a 46 on the other targets which I had never been able to do with my old CZ 455 at 100
The Anschultz 1712 is stock with the two stage trigger lightened to 2 pound , the gun hasnt been bedded or anything and you are right in saying that a bench rest butt would help.
I shoot off a Caldwell BR front rest with a No 1 protector bag and a Protector rear bag both filled with sand blasting sand ,I have removed the sling screws as they have been a problem in the past.
Last night at Belmont SSAA a couple of the guys with the super guns shot 300 they are wonderful shots and I have started asking them as many questions as I can without hopefully bugging them.
Kind regards Ben ( my real name)

Rim Thickness

Hi Ben, 299.15 was the best last Tues Mate. Apart from worrying about Rim Thickness, weights etc etc perhaps we should give more thought to the way we are driving the thing. One thing I know is that if your head is not right you wont score. Regards, Ian

I counldnt agree more

You are not wrong there mate a 300 beats a 299 with a million dots.
The nut behind the butt certainly needs to bring his A game but if the gun won't shoot.
He might as well not bother,
Seems that everything has to be spot on Gun,Ammo and mentality etc etc .
I have never shot a 300 ( thats three hunter targets at 50 and 100 ).
Really looking forward to it one day, but with this six power scope on my little Annie.
I can't see where the bullets are hitting at 100 at night at all .
I had my son patrick spotting for me last tuesday and it was really great to have him there with me.
He said he had great fun.
Well done to Ian Paton on tuesday night with his 299.15 great shooting.
kind regards Ben
