Presentation Ceremony

Sorry for the lack of input from me, but getting hold of an internet connection is not easy here! The nearest internet cafe is 1 hour away!

The presentations took place last night and it went very well. All the other teams including USA were delighted at the win by the Aussies.

I will be excited however to get back to Oz and the warm weather. It is freezing here!!!

Rob.

thanks for your good wishes

Internet access is rare where we are so we apologise for not being able to keep in touch. Fergus has done a great job keeping you all up to date. Of course he has roaming internet access and could even post from the range.
This will be probably my last chance to post till we get home on July 10th so will provide an update here. Sorry if it's a bit long.

The medal awards ceremony is now done and it's finally starting to sink in! It's not until you get the medals in your hand that you can actually believe it. All the other Aussies have been partying hard but we haven't quite been able to. We are just worn out and mentally run out. the tank is empty.
I would firstly like to thank my team mates for an awesome effort. This is for sure the hardest and toughest shooting we have ever done but we made it because of superior team work and faith in each other. Brendan and I have been shooting together as mates for years and I suppose with Sully too so we know each other well but it has been a real pleasure to have Craig in our team as the "youg blood". We call him "Pup" because he calls us "the old farts".
We had many hurdles to get over during the match and one of those was that my own gun packed it in. Not sure yet what the problem really is but suspect another bedding/glue in type issue which has plaqued many of us and also other teams. The legacy of long plane flights I guess. When my first target of the whole championships was a .550 splatter at 100 I knew I was in for a long hard championships and was not going to win individual for sure. We all knew than that it would kill our team results. The 2nd target started to behave the same way so had to finsih the group with Brendan's gun which was my designated back up gun. Same occured after the next group so a decision had to be made by our team and that was I would double up on Brendan's gun for the rest of the Championships. So forget about that gun and ADAPT. Brendan didn't give it a second thought even though this had the potential to damage his personal result. Just an example of what is required to act like a team. As it turned out now it didn't affect his shooting which was extremely consistant and ended up with a great 3rd place. We were able to control the barrel fouling issue which was the main concern we all had. Fouling was a major issue. Powder fouling and copper fouling at the muzzle. It did not matter whether or not you shot with Moly bullets or not. The copper fouling was still there in the last inch of the barrel. Really odd stuff. Very difficult to control and really only Iosso paste would shift it. Sweets did not. It turned out the USA A team had a similar problem and then Tony Boyers gun packed it in and he ended up doubled up on Wayne Campbells rifle for the last 2 days. Conditions were very tough with many 200 metre groups fired holding near the border or at least the last ring. Each of us had our good days and bad days and we just had to work through it and not lose to plot. Focus on the end results and keep on working hard at it together. Craig had to double on Pauls gun once when his seemed to go off on Thursday but eventually got it going again. Paul and Craig shot the hot load of 31 grains and Brendan and I stayed lower to try and keep the fouling issue at hand because of the 2 of us using the one gun. 30 grains. Because we were shooting on the next bench to the USA A team we were able to directly pace the scores. Our basic aim was for each to try and beat their USA shooter every group. Craig had Ed Adams the USA number 1 qualifyer, Paul had his mate Wayne Campbell who has won the WBC before, Brendan had Eugene Buckys who was the eventual individual winner and I had Tony Boyer who needs no introduction. Going into the last day we were still in 2nd place but further behind as each dayhad progressed. The Italians were still 3rd and not going away at all. They put in a very good effort too. We calculated we needed to beat "our" US shooters on every group by 30% on the last day to win. We had no intention of trying to simply defend 2nd place. We hadn't come this far for that. Many of us have been working on this for 14 years and it all came down to this last day. I personally didn't sleep much that night which was not good but I think we were just all determined to figure out a way to make this happen. I've been on the team that was 2nd once before in Sweden 2003 and we did not want it to be that again. After the first target of the last day we were in the lead and again on the 2nd. They were starting to panic and took a hot shooting rifle off one of their shooters in USA team 3, Don Neilson, to give to Ed Adams who has some doubts about his gear. That proved fateful as he then had two AD's on his 3rd target. One of which he thought went through the group. Turned out not so as the backer said 4 shots. The subsequent penalaty cost them yet again and was the final nail I guess. In the end it was calculated the even without that penalty for the 4 shot group we still would have won but the results would have been very close.

At the end it was sort of like an anti climax for me. The tank was empty and was just glad to be over. Most people may be surprised to learn that it is actually not good fun while you are shooting but a huge amount of mental pressure. YYour guts are tied up in knots for days. You need as many of your team to be shooting hot and 'seeing it" and the others who may be struggling to hang on and make sure the damage is minimal to the team score. You can see that the USA team had 1st and 2nd place individually in the end but still that failed to provide them a team winthey wanted.

We need to thank a lot of people who have contributed to this first ever win by an Australian (or any other non USA) team. There are 20 of us Aussies over here in South Africa including wives and partners and all have contributed to a great team effort. The C team made a really great effort to come in 4th place and overtake the other two USA teams. The B team had a rough trot but that happens. We've all been there, done that before. It is a very fine line between having it all happen and having it all come apart but they have all helped the cause and contributed to our win too. This has been very obvious to all other participants who are almost more excited about the win then we are! The congratulations on our team work and professionalism has been awesome.
There are many others back home in Australia who have helped over many years and contributed in small ways to achieve something we always believed was possible, so thankyou to you all. It has been a real "David and Gallioth" effort. In the end you need to know that anything really is possible. You just have to believe in yourselves and plan for it.
One thing that is a very humbling experience for me is to know that there are many people who look upon all of us with envy and maybe wish they were born "an Aussie". We still are the lucky country. It's just that some don't want to believe it or would prefer to destroy it. I hope that many of you back in Australia now realise that you can do it too if you want too. Follow your dreams and believe in yourself. I predict that in the next 5 years there will be a great flush of new and young shooters who will become very good. Guys like Craig. As for Brendan and I we think we will retire as we seem to be the 'old farts" anyway and there aren't really many more goals. Sully reckons he can go on for ever! :) Hope so. I am sure that Craig and many others like him will now become a new force representing Australia in the future.
We are all looking forward to a little holiday now and are off to Kruger National Park later in the week. Our South African hosts have done such a great job of this championships. Africa is now definately on the map in world benchrest.

Again many thanks to you all for your good wishes and help.
Stuart.
ps. ...and by the way...we did it for Piki.
