Ammo

Time for a new topic.
Ammo selection. How do you decide what ammo is best in your rifle? Mine won't extract a fired rws case so I use eley. Every time I test tenex it doesn't shoot as good as the black. I can't get my head around it because tenex is supposed to be the best, but it suits me because I save money.

Old tenex

Compare some measurements of the good & bad. How old is the tenex i had some old stuff that was shorter but fatter. Definitely harder to chamber.
It's weird how some ammo works on different days. Some take a selection to the line & use what works on the day.

I shot some pretty good groups some years back with the old pointed Tennex. However the new blunter style doesn't work well at all. I had a barrel specially chambered for the new Tennex and after trying several batches in a wind tunnel nothing seems to work. Last attempt at eliminating the bugs I used a random batch of R50 which shot better than all the tennex batches used lately. Guess it's time to give Tennex away and use it training some of my Grandchildren.

RWS has a longer case and is hard to extract from chambers setup for Eley
Have you tried the short case SC-R50

Peter
Some do take a few lots to the bench but I try to go to match with just one lot. When a match starts if a shooter is thinking about ammo or anything else thier focus is on the wrong thing, when I sit at the bench it's just me against the wind and that's all I worry about.

I'm with you Peter. The last thing I need is to be trying different ammo during a match.
The second last is to adjust the tuner during the match.

More than one

I do take different ammo to the line but rarely change. Definitely not a tuner change for me.When your just clipping the10 ring for no obvious reason then change & its predictable that's a win.Not superstitious so probably not related my confidence.

In my experience you do not get to tell which is the best, the rifle does. All you get to do is either accept or reject what it tells you. As you well know, there does not appear to be any correlation between price and performance in a single firearm. I remember Mick Schneider telling me that he had a batch of Team that outshot anything else he could find at the time. I have a batch of Centre-X that will hold its own with Tenex at about $11/box less.
You jut gotta keep looking until you find the Holy Grail

Good one.Cheap ammo that shoots better than the rest. On 2 occasions I've seen elley club 5 shots very small after Laupa ammo without a clean. Next shots alot of vertical.
Chasing freakish events is probably not the best way to test ammo or make it to the top.

Had some fun last night

At the TRA temporary range at Belmont we shot three TRA benchrest cards last night
I shot the Turbo light rifle and used three different brands of ammo for the three cards
Centre x on the first 200 score
Eley Black on the second 199 score
SK rifle match on the third 200 score

Now I know that the TRA target is larger than the IRB or TRA target but I was tickled pink with the result
That rifle seems to really be shooting well
The miss was a big gust of wind and I thought I would give it a go
This range is baffled so it does give you a bit of up and down.
Be great to practice on it in the day time with more wind, but can't presently get on it apparently
The SK rifle match was fun but had the most vertical movement
kind regards Ben

All the gear and no idea

Just my way

From the other side of the world, we don't have around here many variety to choose from, Portugal I mean...
Neither we do have all known brands, nor several batches to test from.
So, I went to test in Germany loaded with my rifles. Don't discuss how the companies used to test, because either you accept it or not and don't show up. Never mind, it's the only way I can touch different 20~25 batches.
Had been at Eley and at RWS and choose the best batch they had at the moment, buying enough for around year and a half. Then went to range and tune the tuner at calm days and see how it shoots at windy ones. First for groups, then for score. Frustration depends of several factors...
Now I shoot R50 and never did so good scores, but a even greater effort is being made on bench gear, perfecting the rifle and adjusting the monkey being the butt plate...

Thanks

Selection of Ammo

Take a few batches to the bench one evening with a TRA card, shoot 5-shot groups across the 5 targets in the lane. Go to the next batch, do the same on the next row down, go to the next batch do the same again, continue until no more batches.

Compare the 5-shot groups.

Pick the best one, wind up 1 MOA, right 1 MOA (so the group is not overlapping the previous shots), and do the 5-shot groups again for that batch's row. If the groups continue to hold, it's the keeper, and you can tune from there. Dont forget to reset the elevation/windage.

If there's a spare row, shoot it like you're in a comp, see if shot to shot is predictable in the wind you're seeing.

Go to an indoor range/test tunnel and tune the tuner (though I rarely stuff with mine these days, seems one of the things that Calfee got right "tune it then tape it off, don't stuff with it forever more").

ELEY EDGE

I bought a case of Eley Edge a couple years ago in Sydney that shot pretty good in my Anschutz but tended to have a flier now and then. Anyway when i have new shooters to the rang that want to have a go and dhoot my rifle they get to shoot the edge. Had one chat do two rows on an IRB target 40.5and 49.4 and a young bloke 12 year old straight after shoot 48.3 and 47.2 now today hand an elderly gentle man bit older than me a good golfer but looking at something else where he can sit down we shot hunterclass he came equal 3rd in Group he shoot a 0.165 so just goe`s to show
